The boundaries between architecture and jewellery have always been blurred and never more so than this autumn when internationally renowned architect Zaha Hadid curates a selection of jewels for the Goldsmiths' Fair.
All 170 jewellers taking part in the fair were invited to submit a piece to be considered by Zaha, but only 21 pieces made the final cut to feature in the showcase, entitled Zaha Hadid Selects.
David Mills, head of communication at The Goldsmiths' Company, says: "Drawing on her cutting-edge aesthetic, our first guest curator, Zaha Hadid has chosen pieces which highlight the extraordinary diversity, skill and creativity of jewellers and silversmiths working in Britain today."
The jewellers whose pieces will appear in the Zaha Hadid Selects exhibit in the first week of the fair include Hannah Martin, Ute Decker, Tom Rucker, Heather Woof, Beth Gilmour, Melanie Georgacopoulos, Jane Macintosh, Craig Stuart and William Cheshire.
Week two will display work by Sarah Herriot, Jo McDonald, Jennifer Saker, Mara Irsara, Jo Hayes Ward, Tina Engell, Anna Wales and Heather McDermott.
From Ute Decker's architectural In Praise of Shadows earrings and Sarah Herriot's sprouting Splash ring - inspired by an urban landscape - to Mara Irsara's seemingly precariously balanced Three Times Straight ring, the pieces on show are testament to the wealth of talent in Britain today. Using a range of techniques, from traditional to cutting-edge, the selected jewellers have created innovative, truly original designs.
Now in its fourth decade, this year's Goldsmiths' Fair will take place from 22 September to 5 October at London's Goldsmiths' Hall. New exhibitors include Jacqueline Mina OBE, one of the UK's most prominent goldsmiths, and Cristina Zani, who is renowned for her vibrant and unusual architectural jewellery.
Also showing for the first time are pearl maestro Melanie Georgacopoulos and Tanja Ufer, whose jewels have been likened to miniature sculptures, set with gemstones such as rough diamonds, opals and tourmalines.
Goldsmiths' Fair runs a bursary and mentoring programme for fledging jewellers, and silversmiths and some of these rising stars, including Bola Lyon and Hamish Dobbie, will also be taking part in the show.
