Maria Doulton:  These are The Jewellery Editor's top five watches for men this Christmas, all for under £5,000.

First up is the IWC Aquatimer Automatic that's water resistant to 300 metres. This watch is a proper dive watch, it's not just about styling, it's called the Safe Dive System. So you set the inner bezel to the time that you need to decompress and if by chance the outer bezel gets knocked, the inner bezel will not move.

This Nomos Metro watch is a real favourite of The Jewellery Editor, and it's because it's just so different from any other watch. Behind the dial is a patented movement that Nomos has developed, which is really unusual for a company so small and at this price.

Claire Roberts: It's just extremely cool. I'd buy it for my boyfriend and steal it.

Maria Doulton: This watch has racing written all over it. This is Chopard's Grand Prix de Monaco Historique watch.  Chopard brings one out every year and this one is in a titanium case and it's got those really exciting yellow details and a 1970s-inspired strap. It's powered by a self-winding Chopard movement that is also a certified chronometer.

Montblanc is really one to look for if you're choosing a gift for a man because the Meisterstuck Heritage collection has all the looks and qualities of a much more expensive watch, but offered at an incredible price.

Christine Pasquier: It's a very, very classical watch on a steel bracelet and a sapphire back so you can see the automatic movement.

Claire Roberts: Would look great with a suit.

Christine Pasquier:  Would look great with everything.

Maria Doulton:  Bremont is the watch for tough guys and even Bear Grylls wears one so I think you can believe it when they say that they are tested beyond endurance. Because it's developed in collaboration with Martin Baker, a company that makes pilot's ejector seats, and that's a piece of equipment you don't want to fail. It also has a 24-hour time zone and is resistant to magnetism.

Tudor is quite new to the UK and this watch has got a real 1970s vibe about it and it comes on this really fun strap with these bright colours. I just think that you could have 10 watches in your collection, but I bet you haven't got one of these.
