Now in the hands of fifth-generation Yanes descendants, founder Claudio Yanes was born into a family of Jewish pottery makers in the town of Malpica near the city of Toledo in 1843. Toledo was once home to a unique tri-cultural melting pot of Christians, Jews and Muslims who lived side by side, and whose artistic legacy left an enduring mark on the city, including the different jewellery styles and goldsmithing techniques practiced by the three cultures. Claudio was drawn to the trade of goldsmithing and, after studying in Toledo, settled in Madrid and opened his first shop in 1881.

One of the most popular and enduring sights at Yanes is the Malpica collection, inspired by the Visigoth and Mozarabic decorative motifs of Yanes’ native Toledo. The Alhambra collection is still going strong after decades in circulation and captures the sumptuous ornamentation of the 13th century Alhambra Palace in gold.

Watches from some of Switzerland’s most important brands are also sold, along with an entry-level line of jewellery at very attractive prices called Yanes Young. Cristina Yanes presents a high jewellery collection once a year and is very much part of Madrid’s social life. Bespoke jewellery services are offered and many young couples turn to Yanes before their big day for advice on rings, earrings, cufflinks and even tiaras.
