In his new Acrobat collection, Nikos Koulis looks beyond his native Greece, drawing inspiration from the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky.
Renowned for his use of geometric designs and coloured shapes, Kandinsky is credited with painting the first purely abstract works of art in the first half of the 20th century.
Incorporating both sharp lines and gentle curves, the movement and fluidity in Koulis' jewels are also reminiscent of an acrobat performing and finding his balance.
White gold, hand-painted in lustrous shades of blue, pink, green, red and yellow, creating the effect of enamel, forms the basis of this collection of pendants. Elaborate, mosaic-like detailing is then added in the shape of black and white rose-cut diamonds.
Koulis' dramatic sculptural jewels, intricately designed with sumptuous colours and a luxe rock-chic touch, have quickly earned him a loyal fan base on both sides of the Atlantic. With a Mediterranean flair tempered by an elegant aesthetic, his pieces have an appeal that resonates beyond the boundaries of fashion.
Talking about his design process, Koulis says he draws upon knowledge from his past experiences and reworks it using the flashes of inspiration that come to him. His influences come from "the way people around me interact - I always have something to learn from that".
