Panerai was the top secret purveyor to Italy's Royal Navy of precision underwater instruments that glowed in the dark. Covert stealth operations included the 1941 Raid on Alexandria in which frogmen mounted on their submersible torpedoes placed limpet mines on the hulls of two British warships. The watch used to time the detonations was Panerai's professional military dive watch called the Radiomir.
