New-season hoop earrings

If, like me, you already own a pair of classic hoops, these designs offer a refreshingly new spin on spring's hottest jewellery trend.

  • It’s all about the details for Arman Sarkisyan in these Sail Boat hoop earrings ($12,540). Combining oxidised silver with 22 carat gold, the craftsmanship is exquisite, right down to the tiny diamonds tracing the outline of the hull and the twisted silver rigging.
  • These Cirque Colorful Sapphire Huggies in rose gold by Jane Taylor ($1,355) are ideal if you want a pair of petite hoops that hug the ear. What they lack in size they make up for in colour: pink, orange and yellow sapphires, graduated so that one colour flows into the next.
  • If earrings were like balloons and you could pop them, the result would be these wonderfully witty Wiggly Deflated hoops by Sabine Getty (£6,500). From the Memphis collection, the loops of pink topazes have been designed to resemble a pair of punctured hoop earrings.
  • These space-age Saturnation hoop earrings (£9,000) by newcomer Alina Abegg are set with graduated purple sapphires and South Sea pearls. Buy them on Swoonery.com.
  • I love the double-hoop design of this Rondeur Perlee Double Chain hoop earring (£782) from Parisian jewellery designer Anissa Kermiche. Sold singly, this twist on the classic hoop plays a trick on the eye, with a second hoop seeming to float in space.
