The smaller hourglass presented this year has 1.2 million nano-balls while the larger model has 8 million. These micro-spheres were chosen by Marc Newson, over sand, as their shape is regular and therefore make for a more precise hourglass. The nano-spheres are coated in different metals from gold to copper to give different shades.
