Flowers and chocolates are fine, but for great Mother's Day ideas that will accompany her every day of the year, watches win hands down. The important thing is to fine-tune your search and pick ladies' watches to match her personality: sporty; classical; trendy? Is she fascinated with the mechanics of a watch movement or would she prefer the practical and carefree maintenance of Swiss quartz?

Two trends were very evident this year at the watch fairs - a return to smaller-sized ladies' watches, and the extensive use of mother-of-pearl dials. The Pavonina collection from German brand Glashütte watches encapsulates them both to perfection.

Feminine to the core, the three Glashütte watches we have selected come in softly rounded 31 x 31mm stainless steel cushion-shaped cases with blue mother-of-pearl or galvanized silver dials, with a lovely guilloché pattern fanning out from the center with the option of diamond indices and diamond-set lugs. The quartz movement is conveniently shielded against magnetic fields emitted by mobile devices, and the watch comes on a choice of alligator strap, satin, or an open-linked bracelet with a nice 1970s groove.

Introduced at Baselworld this year, the new Omega De Ville Dewdrop collection caught the eye of many women with its original bracelet. Available in rose or yellow gold, the bracelet is crafted from dewdrop-shaped beads that flow beautifully around the wrist. The opalescent mother-of-pearl dial of the 32.7mm model is offset with 52 diamonds on the indices and bezel, and also comes with a butterfly design. Inside the case, a proprietary Omega Co-Axial automatic movement with COSC chronometry certification keeps the time and date functions in perfect sync. The butterfly model comes in a smaller 27.4mm case and has a quartz movement.

More great Mother's Day ideas come in the form of Longines watches DolceVita collection. These are more classical in nature and return this year with a softened rectangular profile, five different stainless steel case sizes ranging from 25.80mm down to a diminutive 17.40mm, and a choice of dials with or without the incorporation of diamonds, therefore suiting all budgets. The model with the mother-of-pearl dial is set with 13 diamond indices with two diamonds to indicate 12 o'clock. All models are equipped with a quartz movement to power the hours, minutes and small seconds dial at 6 o'clock.

Help us make the future bright

Since founding The Jewellery Editor in 2010, we have grown our digital magazine to be the number one global source of information and inspiration for fine jewellery and luxury watches.

3,500 articles, 150 videos and a reach of over 2 million per month on social media later, we have offered unparalleled and highly respected coverage of our sector. However, despite our editorial success, we are financially struggling as an independent publisher.

Entirely funded, owned and run by Christine and Maria in London, we are now looking to sell The Jewellery Editor so that it can continue to grow in the hands of a different owner. As e-commerce becomes a priority in our industry, we believe there is huge potential for engaging editorial content and are seeking a buyer who shares our values and passion so that under their guidance we can give a bright future to the platform.

We can’t commit to financing the website for much longer so if we don’t manage to initiate any meaningful conversations in the next few weeks, the website will be frozen on 1st April 2018. If and when we find a suitable partner we will revive it and take it to the next stage.

If you are interested to discuss the above, please contact [email protected]

Alternatively, if you are willing to help, you can donate so that in the meantime, we can continue to publish more interesting content.
