Cindy Chao excels at Sotheby’s Hong Kong sale

Taiwanese jewellery designer Cindy Chao achieved a higher than expected price for her "Solstice" cuff that sold for $465,000 at Sotheby's Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite sale on 6 April 2011.

Taiwanese jewellery designer Cindy Chao achieved a higher than expected price for her "Solstice" cuff that sold for $465,000 at Sotheby's Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite sale on 6 April 2011. Selling for over three times the base estimate, this cuff that is in the form of an azalea, achieved US$465,000. Cindy Chao ( read more) created the piece as a one-off "Masterpiece" of which she makes one a year. Cindy Chao carves the wax model from which the piece is cast. It is set with 14.65 carats of precious stones and a 7.02 carat fancy light yellow diamond as well as rubies, pink sapphires and rhodolites. The exquisite craftsmanship can be appreciated in the finesse of the stone setting and the delicate rippling forms of the azalea itself.
