With only one natural black pearl found in every 15,000 oysters, black pearls are hard to come by. Maria Doulton has had her eyes peeled for black, or Tahitian, pearls on her travels this year, and in our new video she showcases some of the best black pearl jewellery that has caught her eye.

Award-winning pearl house Yoko of London take pride in sourcing some of the largest, most unusual pearls from around the world, so it is fitting that her first choice, a stunning black pearl and diamond necklace, is by them. She speaks to Michael Hakimian from Yoko, who describes just why black Tahitian pearls are so special.

Alessio Boschi’s fiery Volcano collection is her next choice. The Italian designer has taken Tahitian Keshi pearls and surrounded them with hot sapphires to recreate the heat of an erupting volcano, and the effect is stunning.

Australian pearl farmer and jewellery house Autore has created Maria’s final choice. Inspired by the national flower of Australia, the Orchid ring pairs Tahitian Keshi black pearls with pink diamonds and white gold.

With wonderful creations like those shown in our video, it certainly seems that when it comes to pearls, black is the new white.
