Despite cloudy skies and frequent downpours, the Cannes Film Festival got off to a traditionally glamorous start, with a stream of A-list celebrities walking the red carpet on day one of the festival for the event's opening film, 'The Great Gatsby'.
First on the red carpet was Gatsby star Carey Mulligan, who traded in her usual adventurous style for a classically elegant Dior Couture gown. While I'm a big fan of her quirky red carpet dress choices, she looked absolutely radiant in this palest of pink, satin Dior Couture gown. Surprisingly, none of Tiffany & Co's Gatsby jewels - specially created for the film - made an appearance. Instead, Carey opted for demure Tiffany & Co. diamond earrings and a bracelet.
You've got to love Cara Delevingne. Famous for her feisty attitude, funny face-pulling and floppy beanie hats, she looked every inch the sexy lady in a black lace Burberry dress, bright-red lips and more Chopard diamonds than is strictly decent. A bit 80s, certainly, but in the best possible way. And those Chopard chandelier earrings are to die for.
Battling it out for best-dressed lady in red were Isla Fisher and Georgia May Jagger. In one corner was Georgia May Jagger in a skin-baring Roberto Cavalli dress that her mother, Jerry Hall, would surely approve of, and some enormous Chopard diamond earrings. In the other corner, Isla Fisher, in floaty Oscar de la Renta paired with edgy Bulgari jewels.
All in all, lots of dazzling diamonds but, aside from Ziyi Zhang's fabulous hot pink de Grisogono earrings and Lana del Rey's emerald earrings by Chopard, not many of the coloured jewels we saw at the awards ceremonies earlier in the year.
