Chopard makes Cannes Film festival sparkle

There is nothing as  unabashedly glamourous as diamonds in the bright sunshine of Southern France. The red carpet is out once again at the Cannes Film Festival where stars including Uma Thurman step out in Chopard jewels. Trend alert: coloured stones are still going strong.

There is nothing as  unabashedly glamourous as diamonds in the bright sunshine of Southern France. The red carpet is out once again at the Cannes Film Festival where stars including Uma Thurman step out in Chopard jewels. Trend alert: coloured stones are still going strong. The white, ivory and nude tones of the celebrities' dresses were the perfect foil to Chopard's jewels that sparkled in the sunshine of La Croisette at Cannes Film Festival. While diamonds are the red carpet jewels of choice, coloured stones are still a strong trend as we still wince from credit crunch. Both Uma Thurman and Jane Fonda wore coloured stones with great panache while Alexa Chung chose a shade of yellow -brown diamond so unusual, that it hardly looks like a diamond. Aishwarya Rai knows the power of a whopper of a diamond ring and walked an impressive 53 carat stone up the red carpet with the perfect accessory: a big smile. Uma Thurman chose emerald cascade-effect earrings that bounced and shimmered as she strode up the red carpet in front of a barrage of paparazzi. Her hair was scooped up showing her elegant long neck and giving the cameras plenty of angles from which to photograph the sculpted planes of her elegant face. The 54 carats of emeralds in her ears matched the bracelet on her wrist.  Jane Fonda chose pretty soft pink pastel-hued earrings featuring tourmalines, spinelles, morganites and diamonds set in rose gold that looked just right with her simple dress and her feathered hair - a hair style reminiscent of her aerobics video days.  Aishwarya Rai went for high wattage glamour with an impressive 53 carat emerald-cut diamond ring that looks big enough for birds to land on and pink and 12 carat white diamond drop earrings. A ring and simple earrings is a chic way to wear large diamonds. The beauty of the stones shines out without any distractions or competition from a necklace. Jude Law was looking very much the British gentleman in his understated LUC Chopard XPS watch in white gold.  Alexa Chung chose an unusual 80.38 carat brown-yellow diamond pendant and a diamond-set butterfly ring. A quirky choice in keeping with her unorthodox approach to glamour.
