BAFTAs 2013: lighting up the red carpet in London

It rained on the red carpet in London, but the stars still shone at last night's BAFTAs. See the jewels in close-up

10 February 2013

The BAFTAs took place at the Royal Opera House in London last night - Sunday 10 February 2013 - and in true British style, the heavens opened, making an umbrella the accessory of choice on the red carpet. The rain didn't deter the star-studded crowd from making some brave fashion choices, though - BAFTA nominee Jennifer Lawrence wore a dusky pink Dior Haute Couture dress that trailed along the floor, leaving her at the mercy of the sodden red carpet. Thankfully, the 'Hunger Games' star's choice of jewels ensured that no one was looking at her rain-soaked hemline - her triangle diamond earrings from Chopard's Red Carpet collection, worn with slicked-back hair, were a fashionable choice for a young actress who has quickly developed a style of her own at the slew of recent award ceremonies.

Known for her brave fashion choices, Elizabeth Olsen wore one of the most memorable dresses of the night: a Chanel Couture organza dress embroidered all over with silver sequins, dark blue feathers and organza camelias. Continuing the floral theme, she accessorised with a Chanel Fine Jewellery "Profil de Camélia" ring and stunning "L'Air" ring. Brit actress Emilia Fox wore a black vintage dress, accessorised with showstopping Adler jewels glittering with magnificent Colombian emeralds, the current gemstone du jour (read more about emeralds here). De Beers dressed four of last night's stars in diamonds: Bond girl Olga Kurylenko, veteran actress Sally Field, Rising Star nominee Andrea Riseborough and quirky songstress Paloma Faith, who paired her glitzy Nicholas Oakwell gown with sparkling De Beers cluster earrings and the evening's most elaborate hairdo.

Rising Star BAFTA nominee Marion Cotillard was a ray of sunshine in a canary-yellow Dior gown, which incorporated the same see-through panel that saw critics accuse Jennifer Lawrence of a wardrobe malfunction at the recent   Screen Actors Guild awards. Around her neck she wore a unique diamond necklace from  Chopard's Haute Joaillerie collection and a stunning ring featuring a deep-blue 21ct sapphire. Meanwhile, cutting a chic figure in a black Elie Saab jumpsuit was Sarah Jessica Parker. Presenting the award for Best Actor to Daniel Day-Lewis for his powerful role in 'Lincoln', she flashed a petite, diamond-set   Jaeger-LeCoultre Joallerie 101 Art Deco watch wrapped twice around her wrist on a narrow, black-leather strap.

Gemma Arterton gave a cheeky nod to Sunday's Chinese New Year celebrations by wearing a Stephen Webster-designed Serpent ring that snaked across two fingers, laden with Forevermark diamonds, while at the Charles Finch and Chanel pre-BAFTAs dinner she opted for pretty brown diamond, amethyst and lavender jade Annoushka Alhambra earrings. The coloured stones theme was rife on the red carpet, too. BAFTA nominee Jessica Chastain stunned in an elegant, electric-blue Roland Mouret gown, paired with a Harry Winston bracelet and earrings set with some impressive blue sapphires that looked fabulous nestled in her red hair. And attention was drawn away from actress Amy Adams' black lace Elie Saab dress by a huge pair of bejewelled Katharina earrings by Fabergé that must have been visible from the crowd, set with oval pink tourmalines weighing 56.36ct. Will the trend for colourful jewels be the hit of the red carpet this awards season? Tune in to the Oscars on 24 February to find out.
