New video: L Ecole Van Cleef and Arpels gives an exclusive insight into the rarified world of jewellery and watchmaking

Maria Doulton travels to L’Ecole Van Cleef & Arpels in Paris, a school like no other where you can master some of the skills of jewellery and watchmaking.

I went to Paris to find out what you can do at L'Ecole Van Cleef & Arpels and joined students discovering the diverse and fascinating history of jewels, learning about the rich world of precious stones and mastering some of the skills of jewellery and watchmaking.

My day started with a lecture on the history of jewels, given by a specialist historian whose tantalising insight into the role and significance of jewels throughout the ages opened my eyes to new ways of understanding the history of adornment. A workshop course in jewellery-making started with a lesson in how to paint a sketch of a jewel with gouache. This was followed by time at the work bench learning how to set a row of diamonds.

I then popped into a gemmology course to discover how to recognise different gem stones and appreciate their diverse qualities. And this was just a little taster. With over a dozen different courses divided into three main areas of history, gemmology and craftsmanship, my day at l'École was but the start of my journey into a better understanding of the beautiful world of French fine jewellery and Swiss watchmaking.

Help us make the future bright

Since founding The Jewellery Editor in 2010, we have grown our digital magazine to be the number one global source of information and inspiration for fine jewellery and luxury watches.

3,500 articles, 150 videos with over 5 million views and a reach of over 2 million per month on social media later, we have offered unparalleled and highly respected coverage of our sector. However, despite our editorial success, we are financially struggling as an independent publisher.

Entirely funded, owned and run by Christine and Maria in London, we are now looking to sell The Jewellery Editor so that it can continue to grow. As e-commerce becomes a priority in our industry, we believe there is huge potential for engaging editorial content and are seeking a buyer who shares our values and passion so that under their guidance we can give a bright future to the platform and help us grow our business to the next stage.
