Night of the necklace at the Golden Globes 2016

An epic night for red carpet jewelry at the Golden Globes with beautiful diamond necklaces and unconventional choices.

Jennifer Lawrence wore a 157ct diamond Chopard bib necklace on the Golden Globes 2016 red carpet

This year's awards season began with a bejeweled bang at the Golden Globes last night in Hollywood. A treat for red carpet jewelry fans everywhere, variety was the name of the game on a night that included everything from classic diamonds and pearls to coloured gemstones and, most attention-grabbing of all, a host of dazzling statement necklaces.

All eyes last night were on Jennifer Lawrence and not just because she won Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for her role in Joy. Her cropped hair and high-neck, scarlet-red Dior gown were the perfect canvas for a large Chopard bib of glittering diamonds.

Once again proving her red carpet know-how, Jennifer Lopez channeled 1940s Hollywood in a canary-yellow Giambattista Valli gown and cape, topping them off with 200 carats of Harry Winston diamonds including a beautiful cascading drop diamond necklace and diamond wreath necklace. A yellow diamond ring and earrings completed a look that few others could carry off.

Emmy Rossum was another star who made jewelry the main focus. She sported a sleekly elegant, asymmetrical Van Cleef & Arpels diamond necklace, an unconventional choice that was red-carpet perfection with her strapless red gown.

Leslie Mann kept things fresh and feminine with an Irene Neuwirth choker of opals, tourmalines paired with a pretty-in-pink Monique Lhuillier gown.

Presenter Olivia Wilde looked to the 1970s for her ensemble of a vintage Bulgari sautoir with carnelian intaglio and diamonds, burgundy sequin Michael Kors Collection dress and matching eye makeup.

The fun did not stop with necklaces. Cookie from the hit show Empire doesn't do understated and Taraji P Henson, the actress who won a Golden Globe last night for her role as the ex-con, did not disappoint in giant emerald drops from Kimberly McDonald for Gemfields.

Presenter Julianne Moore, meanwhile, sparkled in an outsized Chopard Paraiba tourmaline and titanium ring with blue Tom Ford sequins, and nominee Cate Blanchett wore a retro-style diamond bracelet from Tiffany with her ultra-feminine, fringed Givenchy Haute Couture gown.

Pearls also got their moment. Jane Fonda looked resplendent and modern in Chopard pearl earrings and dramatic high-necked gown and Zendaya was dramatic in Tahitian pearls and black diamonds from Yoko London.

With so much fabulous jewelry on display, the question quite frankly is how are the Academy Awards going to top that? You'll have stay tuned to The Jewellery Editor to find out.
