On the first day of the war, Drokin and his wife left their home and moved into his workshop, along with two other families. All of them but Drokin would eventually leave Kharkiv. The jeweller remained in the war-torn city, where more than 10,000 civilians have lost their lives and 20,000 have been injured since the start of the war.
