The rub-over setting is a bezel-type setting that consists of a thin strip of metal that is soldered at a right angle to the shank of a ring to hold a gemstone in place. This secure setting is a more protective choice for softer or brittle gems such as opal, lapis lazuli or amber. With this type of setting, cleaning under the gemstone is impossible unless the stone is removed.
