Joaquín Berao is one of Spain’s most influential contemporary jewellers, combining his love of sculpture, painting, architecture and music in his wonderfully fluid jewellery.

A versatile artist, Joaquín Berao started in jewellery as an apprentice in a small workshop in Madrid, on the very same street his jewellery boutique is located today. His first collection dates back to 1970 and, after presenting it in Ibiza, the entire lot was bought by Bloomingdale’s department store in New York. The pervading sculptural element of his work has meant that his pieces have often been exhibited in museums around the world, and Berao has given many lectures and workshops on jewellery design.

The 1970s and 80s were pivotal decades in Berao’s jewellery odyssey, and many of his pieces still resonate with a cool retro feel. Gold, silver, bronze and titanium are Berao’s metal of choice and his sensual, generous cuff bracelets, animated by their asymmetrical lines and sculptural presence, are perennial favourites. You will often find Berao in his boutique in Madrid’s Salamanca neighbourhood, with its minimalist decor, and sculptures and paintings made by the artist himself.
