As the momentum builds for the 68th edition of the legendary film festival, we take a look at the best Cannes jewellery that sashayed down the red carpet in 2014.

While the first day of the film festival tends to be characterised by more demure red carpet jewellery choices, this gives classic diamonds their turn in the spotlight. On the opening day of Cannes 2014, model-of-the-moment Karlie Kloss joined Chopard co-president Caroline Scheufele in waving the flag for ethical jewellery by wearing jewellery from Chopard's Green Carpet collection crafted from Fairmined gold.

Other notable high jewellery choices included Chinese actress Ziyi Zhang's Chopard diamond earrings and rings, while Jane Fonda broke the white diamond rule by opting for a pair of stunning rubellite Chopard drop earrings.

As the festival progressed, the Cannes jewellery choices became more colourful with designs veering towards the more flamboyant end of the spectrum. Both Julianne Moore and Léa Seydoux accessorised their sweeping designer gowns with Chopard jewellery set with deep green emeralds.

She may not have had a film to promote but Cheryl Fernandez-Versini wowed the crowds in dramatic monochrome de GRISOGONO earrings. One of my favourites was the ever-stylish Marion Cotillard, a regular fixture on the red carpet in Cannes, who looked impossibly pretty in a pleated Dior dress teamed with Chopard jewellery, including a unique jadeite high jewellery bracelet set with sapphires and diamonds.

Renowned for her impeccable red carpet style, Cate Blanchett stole the show at the Trophée Chopard afterparty in an impressive floral Chopard high jewellery necklace, also from the Red Carpet collection. And the Bulgari jewellery Serpenti necklace worn by Australian actress Naomi Watts also deserves a special mention. She wore the glittering diamond necklace back to front as she walked the red carpet at the premiere of How to Train Your Dragon 2.

Another follower of the back-to-front trend was model Cara Delevingne, who draped her unique de GRISOGONO necklace, complete with bejewelled monkey and bunches of bananas, down her back in a contemporary twist on the classic 1920s' look.

With less than two weeks to go until this year's Cannes Film Festival, stay tuned for our red carpet jewellery coverage to discover which actresses will pull out all the stops this year.
