If the designer gowns are the cake then the jewellery is most definitely the icing, and this year saw a liberal sprinkling of bling and sparkle to rival the paparazzi's camera flashes.
Allison Williams, from the HBO comedy-drama Girls, and Gossip Girl actress Kelly Rutherford both chose to wear jewellery by Van Cleef & Arpels for the 66th Annual Emmy Awards, held in Los Angeles. Allison wore a pair of earrings in yellow and white gold with diamonds from the luxury brand's Heritage collection, as well as a Snowflake ring featuring diamonds set in yellow gold. Kelly chose an eye-catching necklace, also from the Heritage range, in yellow gold with cultured pearls and diamonds. A Snowflake ring in yellow gold and diamonds completed her look.
Actress Halle Berry's outfit was one of the most talked about of the evening, and it's easy to see why. Her stunning Elie Saab gown may have been pastel coloured, but the thigh-high slash ensured it was anything but demure. The dusty pink of the dress was perfectly matched by a pair of Doves earrings by Doron Paloma featuring amethyst and mother of pearl.
Mad Men actress January Jones offset her daring crimson strapless dress with some equally edgy jewels. She wore a diamond ear climber by Jack Vartanian and a Carla Amorim black diamond ring.
Sarah Silverman may have garnered more headlines for her "liquid pot" comment than her red carpet attire, but the comedian and Emmy Award winner looked resplendent in a plunging Marni dress and tumbling hair. She complemented her outfit with Pasquale Bruni diamond earrings and a diamond ring by Le Vian.
And it's not just about the big night - there are plenty of pre- and post-Emmy celebrations where the stars are also expected to shine.
